The next innovation at Ophthalmological Center after S.V.Malayan:

Intracorneal ring segments implantation for treating keratoconus was carried out at Ophthalmological Center after S.V.Malayan for the first time in collaboration with Spanish company “Ferrara Ring”. If until now it was only possible to stop the disease progression with older methods of treating keratoconus, current method also gives the opportunity to correct patient’s vision. Before carrying out the surgery we had the chance to interview Dr. Yelena Malayan, head of diagnostic and laser surgery department of Ophthalmological Center after S.V.Malayan and Dr. Pere Del Campo, Doctor-consultant for keratoconus at “Ferrara Ring” company.

Keratokonus is a corneal degenerative progressive disease, when there is a gradual thinning of cornea that is remaining unnoticed by the patient. As a result, there is a deterioration of vision and glasses are no longer helpful.

“There is no main reason for the disease- it is a congenital problem. A person can be born with thinning cornea: that is when collagen is usually not enough to ensure membrane solidity. Basically it is comes out in youth and its progression is very individual: in some persons it can progress quickly, in some others-slowly” explains Dr. Yelena Malayan. Usually the earlier is the stage of the disease the easier is the restoration of the vision.

It has been 9 years since Crosslinking, which is another highly effective intervention for keratoconus management, has been carried out in Armenia. It prevents the progression of the disease and is a conservative means of disease management. Currently intracorneal ring segments implantation is being carried out at Ophthalmological Center after S.V.Malayan that aims not only at preventing the disease, but also at improving patients’ vision.

Intracorneal ring segments implantation at Ophthalmological Center after S.V.Malayan is carried out by using FerraraRing products that are widely used in developed countries. The company is responsible for production of approximately 70% of all the rings/segments utilized worldwide.

-“Our company, represented by Dr. Ferrara prefers to work with the best clinics in the world: in Armenia we chose to work with Ophthalmological Center after S.V.Malayan. The most important issue in case of keratoconus is diagnosis, early detection of the disease, which is perfectly done in this center. We like the fact that the center utilises not a single diagnostic method, but all the diagnostic modalities widely used worldwide. It enables to chose the most appropriate way of treatment depending on the severity of the disease. This surgical intervention is not an easy one, requires professional surgeon: that is why we prefer working with best professionals”.

“Our collaboration with “Ferrara Ring” company is going to be continuous, as Intracorneal ring segments implantation requires individual approach every time” -mentions Dr. Yelena Malayan, head of diagnostic and laser surgery department at ophthalmological Center after S.V.Malayan. “Individual ring segments are going to be provided by the company individually for each of the patients, based on their personal data”.

This surgery is suggested to the patients after all the diagnostic check-ups are carried out, when the stage of the disease development is known.

The surgery lasts 15-20minutes, then the patient is under medical supervision of doctors for about 2 hours, and the operated patient returns home. Patients with keratoconus are under permanent medical control and follow-up. The intracorneal ring segments can be implanted starting from the age of 18 years, based on the age when the disease was diagnosed and its progression stage.

After 35-40 years the disease is not active: the decision on any intervention is made after diagnostic examinations.

Now Dr. Del Campo is sure that “Due to our collaboration with Ophthalmological Center after S.V.Malayan where all the modern techniques are existing, the patients can get all the contemporary services that are provided worldwide, for example in advanced clinics of Barselona” Performance of the novel surgical method at Ophthalmological Center after S.V.Malayan is another possibility for the patients for restoration of vision in their own country.
