Different types of keratoconus treatment in Ophthalmologic Center after S.V.Malayan

Keratoconus is non-inflamatory, usually bilateral, progressive, degenerative disease of cornea. Pathology is characterized by thickening of cornea, in result it begins to bugle into cone-like shape, instead of normal spheric. Keratoconus is very common in Armenia. General clinical signs are myopia and astigmatism.

Treatment and correction of keratoconus is based on stage of disease. It includes cross-linking, intrastromal rings (keraring) and keratoplastics.

Cros-linking is method to strengthen the cornea by using Riboflavin (vit.B2) drops and ultraviolet radiation. The general purpose of cross-linking is to stop and to slow down the progress of keratoconus. This method of treatment is performed in Ophthalmologic Center after S.V.Malayan already for 9 years.

Intrastromal rings are little semiround elements which are produced by inert material. Rings are implanted into deep layers of cornea,into the central part of optic zone. They change the surface of cornea, its refraction and in result astigmatism is compensied and the vision is getting better.

Intrastromal rings steadfastly slow down the progress of keratoconus from 6 to 60 months. This rings can serve for years and if needed quantity, diameter and location can be changed. Implantation is done in ambulatory, without hospitalization, under local anesthesia. It lasts 20-30 minutes. Implantanion of corneal rings proved their safety and effectivity. The procedure is done in Ophthalmologic after S.V.Malayan for already 3 years.

Keratoplasty-transplantation of cornea is optional method of treatment for late stages of keratokonus. The operation has been performed only in our clinic since 1985 and the first operation in Armenia was done by professor А.S.Malayan and visus of the patient was recovered by 100%.
